Growing Up In Camp Springs

By Mike Enzweiler

1949 TO THE PRESENT
Wow, where has the time gone?  Seems like it was not long ago that I was a young boy growing up in Camp Springs and now I am a senior citizen still “growing up” in Camp Springs.

I thought that it was time to share some of my experiences living in a small rural community before I forget any more of them.  Many times I regret that I did not prod my parents more about their younger days.  Once they were gone that information was gone also and oh my what changes they witnessed in their lifetimes, Dad (Frank) born in 1903 and Mom (Rie) born in 1907 and both living into their mid-nineties.  They went from horse drawn carriages to the internet.

For me I date back only to 1949.  The Enzweiler family is mentioned as being among the earliest settlers in our community.  My parents, grandparents and great grandparents spent their entire lives in Camp Springs.

Speers Memorial Hospital in Dayton, KY is where I made my first appearance.  Early on at the hospital I experienced an extremely high body temperature.  The remedy at the time was to soak me in a tray of ice (so I am told). To this day I still have a subconscious fear of ice in any form.

My plan for now at least is to write about things as they come to mind or even to select remembrances that are appropriate to the time of year.  Hopefully these anecdotes will stir pleasant memories in your mind also.
