A Hometown Championby Stephanie Zink (April 22, 2001) |
| Throughout her high school basketball career, Katie Schwegmann has received many honors in recognition of her athletic skill. The list of awards given this high school senior can leave quite an impression. But what's more impressive to this reporter is Katie's humility. Although Katie loves to play basketball and works very hard to be her best on the court, she does not lose sight of what's important and does not let her many accolades go to her head. She is a genuinely sweet and humble person who sometimes finds it hard to talk about her success. Ironically the achievement that she is most proud of is not being voted the number one women's basketball player in the state. "Going to the sweet sixteen", says Katie, "That's been my goal ever since I was an 8th grader." Even though Brossart was not able to bring home the championship, Katie was very proud that the team made the trip down state. |

| So, why basketball? Out of all the sports she could compete in, why is Katie so drawn to basketball? Very simply she responded, "It's fun! It's something I love to do!" Katie went on to explain that basketball has taught her a lot about herself and about hard work. This lesson really hit home while she was recovering from knee surgery after the 1999-2000 season, "I learned not to take stuff for granted." | |
| The big question that everyone has been asking recently is, where will Katie go from here? She's had numerous offers from colleges all across the nation. From as far away as UCLA, to right here at home with Northern Kentucky University. After months of deliberation, Katie has decided to attend Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She was able to visit the campus and meet with the team and coaches. Katie liked the people she met and felt like she fit in there. They seem to have the same goals and philosophy about the game as she does. She was impressed with the emphasis on the importance of family, which is something that Katie also feels strongly about. Education is also important to Katie. Throughout her four years at Bishop Brossart High School she maintained first honor status and is currently holding a 3.975 grade point average. At Miami University she plans to enter the pre-med program with the hope of becoming a doctor. When asked how it will feel to be a freshman once again, Katie says she is a little scared. "It will be different, but I'm ready for it!" |

The Schwegmanns (Pat, Susan, Katie,Greg II, Jill & Greg)
Katie has had a lot of press coverage over the last couple years due to her tremendous talent. We've seen her stats, we know the scores and we've heard tell of her feats on the basketball court. Some of us have even been courtside to witness her in action. With all the media exposure, we still do not have a complete picture of who Katie Schwegmann really is. There is much more to her than stats and percentages. She is a Christian who lives out her faith daily in prayer and worship, and in how she treats her fellow human beings. She is dedicated and hard working both on and off the court. She loves her family and her home, and although she will be traveling to Oxford this fall her roots are firmly planted in Camp Springs soil. |

She strives to be the best at what she does, but keeps herself focused on what's important. In her acceptance speech for the Miss Kentucky Basketball award Katie reflected, "I don't play for the win or the glory…Basketball has given me character and confidence. I've learned how to deal with defeat and how to accept success." Spoken like a true champion.
Campsprings.com congratulates Miss Katherine on her award and wishes this hometown champion all the best for her future. |
