Camp Springs Fire
Department Celebrates 50 Years of Service!
In 1949, when the
Camp Springs Volunteer Fire Department was organized, the only equipment
on hand was "a piece of paper and a pen". That quote belongs to the department's
first chief, John Reitman and was retrieved from a 1965 newspaper article
that reported the burning of the department's mortgage at a celebration
at Shady Inn picnic grounds in Camp Springs. As many as 250 spectators
were on hand to celebrate as Chief Reitman set the deed ablaze.
On Saturday, May 8, 1999,
another group of spectators celebrated a new milestone in the department's
history. The Camp Springs Volunteer Fire Department, also known to many
as "300", turned 50. There was an open house that included an up-close
look at an AirCare helicopter and several other displays. The festivities
were concluded with dinner, dancing and a visit from long-time fireman
"Puffer" who made a special presentation to 3 fifty year-old Camp Springs
firemen.
