2002 DARI BAR BLITZ-A-THON (Updated: September 10, 2002.)
Camp Springs residents and siblings Kate and Joe Zink have embarked on a mission this spring and summer involving a menu item at the Silver Grove Dari Bar. (Dari Bar is pronounced "dairy bar". Please note however, there is neither a dairy nor a bar located on the premises.)

Upon their first visit of the year to the "DB", Kate and Joe decided this would be the year to enjoy each of the ice cream "Bliztes" offered by the Dari Bar. There are twelve. In addition to eating the treats, the two Blitz-A-Thoners decided to offer commentaries as well.

First out of the gate was cherry cordial.

"I liked it" said Joe. "The texture of the chocolate was a little undesirable and it clung to the cup, but overall it was a good blitz."

"Not enough cherry" added Kate.

Saturday, May 4 - Blitz # 2: Praline
"Now that's a good blitz" said Joe. "Creamy texture and a taste so good it almost made me cry. Definitely my favorite so far."

Kate was impressed as well. "Praline blitz - deliciously refreshing with just the right combination of caramel swirl and pecans in a smooth vanilla soft serve ice cream. A great combination of smooth and crunchy. Thumbs up for Kate."

Sunday, May 12 (Mother's Day) - Blitz # 3: Tropical
"The name suits the dairy treat" said Kate. "I was transported to a "tropical" setting with the first bite of a delicious strawberry nestled in a creamy vanilla soft serve. Within moments, the bananas surfaced and they were just the right amount of ripe. This treat was good to the last bite. It was a favorite - only one suggestion . . . add a little chocolate syrup swirl for the chocolate lovers. I give it a thumbs up."

"This one is arguably too healthy for a blitz" said Joe. "Sliced bananas and strawberries with vanilla ice cream. In other counties this combination might be illegal. And while I'm not a huge fruit fan, bananas do appeal to me and led to my decision to vote this blitz into the top ten. Kindly ignore the detail that we've only sampled 3 so far."

Sunday, June 2 - Blitz # 4: Heath
(Kate) The Heath Blitz was a balanced mix of Heath candy bar and vanilla soft serve. The candy was chopped in near perfect bite size pieces with a near perfect crunch. The heath left the vanilla soft serve with just the right amount of a toffee flavor. The only problem - well, maybe the only 2 problems are: minimal chocolate (only the outside of the heath pieces) and maximal teeth build up of toffee as you chew each morsel. Another great use of the toffee flavored ice cream was a dip for my fries! So, for this blitz, Kate gives it a 1 thumb up - the other hand was busy getting the heath from her teeth.

(Joe) I enjoyed my Heath Blitz the way most Camp Springs residents seem to enjoy theirs; with a cheeseburger, fries and one long, cool styrofoam cup full of thirst-quenching Silver Grove water. The blitz itself was quite tasty. Almost as good as mom used to make. The Heath part was Heathy. The ice cream part was ice creamy. Not much more to say.

Sunday, June 20 - Blitz # 5: M&M
(Kate) M & M blitz - colorful, crunchy and refreshing on a foggy, humid night. The blues, greens, yellows and reds were quite cheerful, but I couldn't tell for certain whether or not the candies were the real M & M "McCoys" . Nonetheless, the blitz held its own and meanders away with a 2 thumbs up rating. One suggestion . . . make an M & M face on the top so the consumer will know whose candies they are anyway.

(Joe) If you like M&M's and vanilla ice cream, then this blitz is for you. The candy that once bragged about "melting in your mouth, but not in your hands" is the chilling star of the M&M Blitz. Aside from this ironic association between candy and cream, I will admit I've often wondered aloud why M&M's are even called M&M's. Aren't they really just M's? Either way, the votes are in and the M's have it! Two cones up on this one.

Sunday, June 30 - Blitz # 6: Oreo
(Kate) The Oreo blitz - is it a cookie or an ice cream? - stop, you're both right . . . I really liked the taste, especially when I crunched on a big piece of Oreo cookie. I would have liked more crunch and less cookie crumbs - they reminded me of the mush in the glass of milk when pieces of your Oreo break off. But the big pieces were great. Overall, I would give it a 1 1/2 thumbs up - especially on a hot summer night.

(Joe) "A kid'll eat the middle of an Oreo first and save the chocolate covered outside for last." Do you remember this line from the old Oreo commercials? I did and thought I'd try the same approach with the Oreo Blitz. Unfortunately the results were less than spectacular. Can you say, "What a freakin' mess."?

Oh well. We have officially reached the halfway point in our Blitz-A-Thon journey.

Up next, my all-time favorite blitz, Reese.

Sunday, July 7 - Blitz # 7: Reese
(Kate) Now here's a great taste treat - delicious chunks of Reese Peanut Butter Cups mixed into Vanilla Soft Serve. Just consider it a wholesome balanced treat - peanut butter for protein, soft serve for dairy and chocolate from a plant? okay, that's a stretch but it was just the right amount of nutrition and delicion ? for me.

(Joe) The only thing better than a frozen Reese Cup is a frozen Reese Cup in vanilla ice cream. Before Kate and I decided to travel down the highway of Blitz, I would religiously order a Reese Blitz upon my arrival to the Dari-Bar. And now 7 blitzes into our mission, I know why . . . Reese Blitzes are supercalafragalisticexpealladocious! In other words, they're very, very, very good.

Monday, August 5 - Blitz # 8: Snickers
(Kate) I've never really been a Snickers fan so it's fair to say that chunks of a not favorite candy bar immersed in vanilla soft serve was not all that exciting for me. If you like the nutty candy, you may wish you had bought the real "Snickcoy" - not quite enough of the bar in the blitz. all in all, looking forward to the next taste treat.

(Joe) As one of my college professors used to say about some of my test results. "That ain't nuthin' to write home about." So goes the Snickers Blitz. I bet even Mama might not speak too highly of this one, and she loooooooooooves Snickers Bars!

Saturday, August 24 - Blitz # 9: Butterfinger
(Kate) Butterfinger tasted like it sounds - butterfinger pieces in the vanilla soft serve. Not too buttery, definitely not too fingery lickiny, but certainly good. Even though a little added chocolate would have made the chocolate lovers a bit more happy. Next time, I think I'll have a real butterfinger candy bar in one hand and a soft serve cone in the other, and alternate bites and licks.

(Joe)The Dari Bar version of the Butterfinger Blitz is definitely in my Top Ten. (Of course that's not saying much since I've only tried 9 of them.) The truth is that this blitz is indeed a good one. In fact, I liked it so much I tried the Dairy Queen version to compare. They're both dandy!

Saturday, September 7 - Blitz # 10: Hawaiian
(Kate) To have or not to have a Hawaiian blitz - that is the question, and it's the easiest darn question I've ever answered - "none for me, thank you very much". Instead of saying "Where's the beef?" how about telling us:"Where's the coconut? Where's the pineapple? and Where's the pecans?" And I almost forgot . . . Where's the chocolate? Now to be totally fair, it wasn't supposed to have any chocolate, but as a #1chocolate lover, maybe that would have helped. On the positive side, I'll be saving myself a few calories since I won't be having another one any time soon. Here's hoping the last 2 on the list for this season - chocolate chip and malted milk balls - are all a blitz loving girl could hope for. See you at the Dari Bar.

(Joe)The best thing about the Hawaiian Blitz is its name. Maybe it's me, but I don't believe God intended for pineapples and coconuts to be mixed in ice cream. And isn't it wrong to serve an Hawaiian Blitz in Kentucky? I hope I have some taste buds left for the final 2 blitzes!
