Camp Springs Tree Day June 12, 2006

    D. J. Scully of the UK County Extension Office again arranged for trees to be given to children in the Camp Springs area. On the morning of June 25, Elissa Plattner and Betty Daniels went to the Extension Office to package 70 red oak seedlings for distribution at the St. John's Lutheran Church Vacation Bible School. That evening, at 6:00 pm, D. J. delivered the trees and one large red oak to be planted in the church yard. As part of the evening's activities for the children, D. J. explained the proper planting and care instructions to those present. The trees were distributed to all present and the older children helped in planting the big tree. It is hoped that our children will gain greater respect for the tree covered valley we live in and keep it growing.

Camp Springs Tour Sunday, April 23, 2006

It was in mid-February that Bruce Ferguson called me (Betty Daniels) to ask if I might be able to set-up a tour of Camp Springs in April for the Northern Kentucky Heritage League. They would like to come for a Sunday afternoon to hear about the area and to have dinner in the area if possible. I told him about the Stonebrook Winery and contacted Dennis Walter who thought it could be worked out to serve 50 guests. The judge was delighted to hear this and already was well acquainted with Dennis so they conferred. At one point, there were to be two seatings of 50 each. While the tour of the stone houses would be taken by one half of the group, the other half would have wine tasting and dinner. That number of people changed as we got close to the date which was set for the Sunday after Easter.

I contacted Pastor Garber about starting at St. John's Lutheran Church and he felt that it could provide space for a short program and slide show presentation of stone houses in the area. Parking was also available for some visitors' cars to be left there as they doubled up for the tour. He also began working on the map of the tour to make it easy to follow for the sightseers.

The information was presented to the February 20th meeting of C.S. I. There was a lot of interest and offers to help. Dennis announced that he would serve a choice of grilled steak or chicken.

As reservations came in to Judge Ferguson, the numbers changed and there were adjustments made with Dennis. The week before the event, Elissa Plattner suggested that she make copies of a page and a half of material I had written about the area, taken from the National Register Nomination. It needed a bit of updating and Elissa had it printed off, enough for one copy for each car so that it could be read as the visitors drove around. A good idea which shortened the time spent for the program.

The date, April 23, at 3:00 pm was chosen for the program to kick off the tour and dinner. Previous to the event, Lauri Harding and Betty took directional signs and placed ribbons on properties to be noted. It could not have been a more beautiful time to see the red bud and dogwood trees and lovely flowers. C.S.I. members came at 2:30 to welcome the guests. Debbie Buckley very generously made up professional looking name badges for us. Pastor Phil had worked out many details on the map and accompanying route sheet, even to dividing the two separate group routes. Only a few visitors missed a turn or went too far but there were many compliments on the details that were provided.

The program was opened by the judge, explaining the procedure to be followed. Nancy Enzweiler, vice-chair of C.S.I., welcomed the visitors. Betty gave a very short history and made a few comments on the six minute slide show, provided by Dennis Walter. Debbie made a very well organized summary of C.S.I. activities, goals and objectives and invited everyone to the May 20th Wine Festival. Phil explained map details. Mike Enzweiler suggested that he could open St. Joseph’s Church for the visitors to see the art work inside. This was appreciated by many.

The first group of happy diners was finished before 5:00 and began their tour as the first tour group appeared for their meal. In all, there were 65 diners and about 10 who just took the tour. Lauri and Debbie assisted Dennis' family in serving.

Many guests suggested that we do this more often and include open houses in some of the stone houses.
